This series of photographs portrays my peers standing half-submerged in open bodies of chilly water. I’m interested in the various visceral reactions of each subject as they simultaneously deal with the cold temperatures and the act of having their portrait made while naked. In the process of making these pictures, I too am in the water experiencing the same natural elements. In that sense, these images represent a shared uneasiness and discomfort. The portraits also depict everyone while we are at a tenuous and transitory time in our lives—we are all young adults—and the physical and psychological insecurities that I have about myself are represented in how I view and photograph my peers.
